The Nine. Once an academy for training students in the ways of wizards and alchemists, has become a facility for harvesting the powers of students for study. Cassarah Telmar escaped the Nine, vowing to bring it down. But is the choice to live as a slave or to die with freedom one she can make alone?

What I liked about the book:the atmosphere of the world after the war-nobody knows whom to trust
the presence of religion in such a world-the book had its share of devout men and the nutcases who killed in the name of religion
I loved how confused Vincent was, regarding his cyborg-ness. He didn't know whether he was alive or had died when they decided to replace parts of him with machine!
James' character-his cocky attitude and the humor he brought to the story made him like him a lot.
What I did not like:
there was almost no humor in the book. I mean I get it that this was supposed to be a serious story but a little humor would have gone a long way.
the events individually were good to read about but they didn't come together like one big story.
the romance between Cass and Caleb felt forced. I also didn't like Cass' character at all. She felt too inhuman and unfeeling to me.

The End Begins The Nine Jeff Zweig II 9781467968560 Books Reviews
What choice would you make if you were presented with the option of living as a slave or dying with freedom? That is the choice at the center of The End Begins, a novel that finds its roots in an alternate history of World War II. Cass, a sorceress, discovers that her students are being used as part of an experiment and ventures out into the unknown to undertake a dangerous journey in order to bring down the program. In the process, however, she learns more than she expected.
To say more about this book might be to spoil the surprise at its heart. I enjoyed the variety of characters that the novel focused on and its shifting points of view that allowed me, as the reader, to experience the story in many different ways. A swift pace and solid action make this an enjoyable speculative fiction read.
